Associated Grant Makers (AGM) is a nonprofit membership association of corporate, private, public and individual grant makers working together to build thriving communities through effective and responsible philanthropy.  Founded in 1969, AGM catalyzes leadership, while encouraging vision and innovation across the philanthropic sector.  AGM Members share in the belief that philanthropy is an essential component of every community.  On behalf of its Members, AGM also provides services to nonprofits and other grant seekers to build capacity in the sector.  Through an extensive portfolio of services, along with the leadership capacity of its Members, AGM keeps grant makers and grant seekers at the forefront of philanthropy.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

The Director of Member Programs and Services is a newly created full-time position reporting directly to the Executive Director.  The person in this position will be responsible for providing direct supervision to other staff and, in the absence of the Executive Director and as directed, taking secondary responsibility for overall operations.  This position is responsible for managing member relations and providing services and support to AGM members and other constituents.  These include:

  • Takes lead responsibility for designing and implementing Member (grant maker) programs and services.  This includes working with Executive Director and Board Program Committee to conceptualize program offerings and to ensure that members' voices are heard in program development, that programming is reflective of and responsive to emerging trends in philanthropy and reflects AGM's values around diversity, inclusion and equity.
  • Manages external relations with key groups and stakeholders, including affinity groups such Greater Boston Funders for Women and Girls, the Grants Managers Network, AAPIP, NEBIP, EPIP, etc.
  • Actively participates in key public events, especially those held by Members
  • Works in conjunction with Director of Communications to insure that website content is relevant and fresh
  • Participates actively in Member outreach and retention activities
  • Has lead responsibility (with oversight from Executive Director) for key signature events including:
    • State of the Sector (January)
    • AGM's Annual Meeting
  • Works with Partners Coordinator to design events that bring funders and nonprofits together
  • Manages ongoing constituent roundtables including
    • Small Foundations (aka SPIFFY)
    • Community Foundations
    • Corporate Foundations
  • Shares responsibility with Executive Director for managing relationships with geographically based funder groups (e.g., Western Mass, North Shore, Cambridge)
  • Conceptualizes and implements learning opportunities in various parts of the state (e.g., Funders Day out)
  • Supervises staff with responsibility for Partners (nonprofit grant seekers) work, as well as information and research services
  • Keeps in touch with Members to determine developing needs/interests and works with key internal staff to design and deliver products (e.g., research briefs) or programs around emerging interests
  • Maintains familiarity with Member activities, research and projects
  • Works with Executive Director on fundraising as needed, particularly around special events.

Other duties include: Serve as staff to AGM board committees as assigned.  Develop work plans, strategic plans, reports and departmental operating budgets as assigned.  Respond to questions and inquiries via telephone, email, or walk-ins.  Assist with member development activities.

Requirements:

    • Bachelor's degree, required; graduate degree preferred
    • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressively increasing professional experience demonstrating management and leadership abilities, preferably in foundation grantmaking
    • Knowledge of the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors, locally and nationally
    • Demonstrated ability to organize, manage and analyze information
    • Excellent written and spoken communications skills
    • Computer literacy
    • Access to consistent, reliable personal transportation for in-state travel.

Capabilities: 
This position requires knowledge of and experience in philanthropy.  The Director of Member Programs and Services must be knowledgeable about current trends in the sector.  Qualified candidates will possess skills in program planning, project management, and customer service.  He/she must possess the ability to think strategically and develop effective work plans

The successful candidate will be service-oriented, entrepreneurial, a quick learner, and be comfortable speaking before large and small groups.  He/she must have good common sense, as well as a strong sense of humor and be capable of providing sound advice.  He/she must be patient, courteous, and have the ability to understand, interpret, and prioritize requests from members and nonprofit organizations.  This position requires an ability to analyze customer needs and philanthropic trends, and to organize and present materials in a manner that is easily accessible and understandable by the general public.

Salary Level:  $55 - 65,000
